Does Your Home Have a Sewage Ejector or Grinder Pump?
Many homeowners don't realize their property relies on a sewage ejector or grinder pump system until something goes wrong. Routine preventive maintenance can help identify potential problems before they lead to sewage backups, unexpected repairs, or system failure.
What preventive maintenance may include
- Sewage basin inspection and cleaning
- Pump operation testing
- Float switch inspection
- Discharge piping and check valve inspection
- Alarm testing, when applicable
- Identification of potential system problems
Maintenance procedures depend on your system's condition and accessibility. We'll explain what your system needs and give you flat-rate pricing before any work begins.

Warning signs
Don't wait for a sewage backup
Sewage ejector and grinder pumps work out of sight, so problems often go unnoticed until a basement bathroom backs up. Call if you notice any of these.
- A high-water alarm going off, or an alarm that never seems to get tested
- Sewage or wastewater odors near a basement bathroom or laundry area
- The pump running constantly, cycling often, or making new noises
- Slow drains or backups in fixtures below the main sewer line

Sewage pump maintenance questions
How do I know if my home has a sewage ejector or grinder pump?
If you have a basement bathroom, laundry, or fixtures below the level of the main sewer line, wastewater usually has to be pumped up. Look for a sealed basin with a lid in the basement floor and a pipe leading up from it, sometimes with an alarm box nearby. Some homes in Hamden and North Haven also rely on grinder pumps to reach the street sewer. Not sure? Call us and we'll help you find out.
What's the difference between a sewage ejector and a grinder pump?
A sewage ejector pump lifts wastewater and solids from a basin up into the main drain. A grinder pump grinds waste into a fine slurry first so it can be pushed through smaller pressure piping, often over longer distances or uphill to the sewer main.
How much does sewage pump maintenance cost?
Pricing depends on the type of system, its condition, and how accessible the basin is. We give you flat-rate pricing that you approve before any work begins, and you can save $50 on approved preventive maintenance through January 31, 2027.
What if you find a problem during maintenance?
We explain what we found and quote any repairs separately. Nothing beyond the approved maintenance is done without your approval.
