The three categories of water damage — and why they matter.
Not all water damage is equal. The IICRC classifies water losses into three categories based on contamination level. Response, PPE, and what can be salvaged all depend on which one you have.
Category 1
Clean Water
Water from a sanitary source that poses no substantial risk from ingestion, inhalation, or dermal contact. If left standing, however, clean water can degrade to Category 2 or 3 within 24–48 hours.
Common causes
- Burst water supply lines
- Water heater tank leaks
- Faucet supply line failures
- Ice maker line leaks
- Washing machine supply line failures
- Overflowing sinks (with clean water only)
How Drain Wizard responds
Extract quickly, dry to standard, and monitor to keep the loss in Category 1. Most carpet and pad can be saved if we get there fast.
24/7 ResponseCategory 2
Gray Water
Water containing significant contamination — chemical, biological, or physical — that could cause discomfort or illness. Includes water that has passed through appliances or contains detergents, food particles, or soap.
Common causes
- Washing machine discharge water
- Dishwasher leaks
- Shower and bathtub overflows
- Sump pump failures
- Overflowing washing machines
- Aquarium and waterbed failures
How Drain Wizard responds
Extract, remove porous materials that can't be salvaged (pad, some drywall), apply EPA-registered antimicrobials, then dry to standard.
24/7 ResponseCategory 3
Black Water
Grossly contaminated water containing pathogenic, toxigenic, or otherwise harmful agents. Any water contact with sewage, ground surface floodwater, or seawater is Category 3 and a real health hazard.
Common causes
- Sewer backups
- Septic system overflows
- Floodwater entering the home
- Sewage-contaminated toilet backups
- Rising groundwater from storms
How Drain Wizard responds
Full containment, PPE, and disposal per IICRC S500. All porous contaminated materials come out; hard surfaces are cleaned and disinfected; the space is dried and clearance-verified.
